Ubon Candle Festival Lights Up! True Boosts 5G to Support Thailand’s Soft Power

08 July 2025

July 8, 2025 – True Corporation is supporting a major traditional festival in Northeastern Thailand and promoting Thai tourism by boosting its 5G network coverage for the Ubon Ratchathani Buddhist Lent Candle Festival. The event runs from today through July 13, 2025, at Thung Si Muang and surrounding areas in the heart of Ubon Ratchathani city, aiming to accommodate the large number of tourists expected to attend. The enhanced network is especially designed to support the highlight candle processions, both daytime and nighttime, on July 10 and 11, with network engineers monitoring the system 24/7 throughout the event.

Mr. Prathet Tankuranun, Chief Technology and Information Security Officer of True Corporation Plc., said that “We are committed to supporting Thailand’s soft power through traditional festivals and important events to promote tourism. For the Ubon Ratchathani Buddhist Lent Candle Festival, our teams have surveyed the event areas and expanded 5G and 4G service coverage throughout the festival grounds to enhance performance. This allows tourists to share their experiences continuously, whether through social media, live streaming the festival atmosphere, uploading stunning photos of candle floats, or sharing high-resolution video clips instantly.”

The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival is an artistic tradition passed down through generations. The event involves offering candles to monks for use during Buddhist Lent. Over time, it has evolved into a spectacular showcase of giant, intricately carved wax sculptures, featuring scenes from the Buddha’s life and local Isaan legends. Each candle sculpture reflects the devotion and skill of Thai artisans, many of whom spend months crafting these masterpieces.

The carved candle processions are displayed at Thung Si Muang, in front of Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram, and at Lan Khwan Mueang. The parade moves along key roads in the city, creating a vibrant spectacle that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, both local and international. The event also features traditional folk music, cultural performances, OTOP (One Tambon One Product) market stalls, and rare local delicacies available only during the festival.

True has ensured strong 5G and 4G coverage throughout Ubon Ratchathani, supported by a team of network engineers monitoring the signal 24/7. In addition, Cell-On-Wheels (COW) mobile base stations have been deployed to handle high traffic and adjust signal parameters in real time according to user behavior. Dedicated network engineers are also stationed on-site to manage the system.

“We’re ready to support people traveling to attend the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, as well as those returning home for the Buddhist Lent holiday. Our goal is to provide a seamless digital experience nationwide for all users, including True and dtac customers, as well as Thai and foreign tourists,” Mr. Prathet concluded.
